Day One
Hey there! You, yeah you! I’m writing to you, and I want you to know, I want your attention. Just like the 600 odd advertisements you see in a day, in my own way, I am trying to attract your interest. Statistics from this site, suggest any number of ads from 500 to 5,000 can be seen a day. But to the critical reader, it appears that, despite being exposed to several thousand adverts per day, the number that we engage with and recognize is probably well under 100. Can you think of what the last commercial you saw was? You probably interacted with the ad using your short term memory and attention. Still, doesn’t this inundation beg to be analyzed? There is no question that pervasive exposure (to anything) over time will affect our thoughts and reasoning patterns. So why do we accept being targeted each day? Maybe ads aren’t inherently bad, but I argue that our system of disseminating brand “propaganda” through the media, clothing, etc. deserves the public’s full and complete criticism.
