Valerie Nelkin 2010 Honors Project
PROCESSING: using open source* software and other tactics to create and personally explore definitions of beauty, authorship and accessibility to emotions such as empathy and compassion within the context of global communications.
*OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE Software whose source code is published and made available to the public, enabling anyone to copy, modify and redistribute the source code without paying royalties or fees. Open source code evolves through community cooperation.
You can read more about that ethic here: OPEN SOURCE
I was lucky to mentor Val Nelkin ’10 honor’s project. Her project investigated the creative possibilities of Processing as well as her own reaction to creating using opensource tools v. paint as Val was very used to painting in isolation in the very traditional manner of a painter. I am embedding here a slideshow of her Processing interactive programs, and her final installation for her defense of her honors project, as well as a link to her paper in which she discusses what she learned through her technical as well as reflexive processes:
Nelkin’s final paper can be viewed HERE.
