ABOUT
St. Lawrence University’s Department of Fine Arts offers courses that lead to the B.A. degree with concentrations in Art or Art History. Studio Art courses provide students with a grounding in the technical, aesthetic, and critical aspects of artistic production and exhibition; study in art history provides students with the methodological and critical tools for the analysis of visual culture and its role in history. The study of art and art history is central to a liberal-arts education, especially in a world increasingly shaped by images and seemingly endless visual information.
The Fine Arts program thrives at St. Lawrence. Studio courses include digital and traditional artistic media. Art History courses range from the ancient Mediterranean, Asia and Africa through the Renaissance the postmodernism.
Creative process, technique, and content are taught concurrently throughout all of the studio courses. Both studio and art history courses bring students to an awareness of the philosophical, psychological, and cultural bases from which works of art take shape. Close mentoring and collaborative relationships are encouraged and frequently continue after graduation.
Our faculty is actively involved in the larger artistic and academic community, regularly exhibiting and presenting their research.
The department has excellent facilities that keep improving. Digital art, video and photography programs are housed in new and expanded spaces. The Newell Center for Arts Technology maintains state-of-the-art capabilities for all digital media.
