Jay Parini on the “Well-Tempered Lecturer”

With today being the first day of classes here at St. Lawrence, I thought it would be worth linking to this piece, “The Well-Tempered Lecturer” by Jay Parini.  This is a reflection on the academic lecture (the kind students here are just getting reacquainted with), and his purpose is to argue, “There is a great tradition of lecturing.”  Along the way there are some astute observations on what makes a good lecture, and some excellent commentary on lectures driven by information technology.  Great stuff for a new school year…
