Becoming WIP

I’m planning to have my video have a series of images that take real women and transform them into more “pin-up” looking pictures like the one above to the music of Cake’s “Building a Religion”

I would also like to note that I did not complete these images with the same careful effort towards detail as I usually do for my photomanipulations because I knew it would be put into a video format and didn’t think it was necessary. My point is not to present polished realistic looking images but rather make the point of how easily our media can alter images and to make my viewers question what they believe to be beautiful. Obviously, what we value in this society has become something that doesn’t even necessarily exist in real life.

References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot
Posted on March 17th, 2009 at 8:27 pm by sjrodr06 and

Yeah….so for my Representations of Violence class I have to do a scene from this play. I’m reading the play right now and it’s pretty weird and yet–I must read more lol. Anyway the title comes from a conversation between the lead character Gabriela and the Moon

Moon: From the tears of women come…Two Pieces of Bread Expressing the Sentiment of Love
Gabriela (gasps): Ay! References to Salvador Dali make me hot!

So of course after reading that I had to find out who Salvador Dali was. I knew he was an artist but I’d never really studied his work so here are some of my findings.

! I hadn’t even realized he was the one who did the melting clock painting…now I feel like a noob.

“Company” Name
Posted on March 16th, 2009 at 2:33 pm by sjrodr06 and

So I realize for my project I’m going to need a company name in order to be truly effective.  So first I’m going to list all the companies/stores/products I like and see why their names work and why I like
them or on the flipside why I don’t like them.

Sanrio/Hello Kitty
Tokidoki
Kid Robot
Yellow Rat Bastard (YRB)
Ice Cream
Juicy Couture

Alright, already I see a bit of a trend that I like.  A few of them focus on an object or a character that they use at a mascot or theme in their products.  So maybe I should start thinking about my own mascot or theme for my product line.   There’s also something cute and childlike in most of the names.  Since that’s what I’m going for that’s something I’ll focus on.  I like that Tokidoki took a word from another language and adopted it as their own, that could be interesting.

I don’t like Yellow Rat Bastard because I feel like it could cause unnecessary controversy and cut down my audience base.  I remember when I was scared to tell my mom what YRB stood for because I didn’t want to get in trouble or be banned from going there.  I also don’t like Juicy Couture because…well I find something very corny about it.  It could also be that I just don’t like the word juicy, it grosses me out for some reason.  But that aside I feel like putting Couture in the name of any fashion line is rather pretentious.  I’d like to avoid that.

This should help me make a list or two of possible names (and mascots)

Mascots/Themes

Fox
Phoenix
Flowers
Cats
Dogs
Animals
Rose
New York City
Tokyo
Harajuku
Shibuya
Ganguro/rebel girls
kawaii bunka/culture of cute
Islands
Summer
Sun
Urban
Rainbows
Colour
Creepy
Cute
Dark
Fun

Name Ideas so far
Since I want my products to be cute yet a little rough around the edges I’d like my product name to be the same. Nothing to rough or vulgar but cute with a little hint of something else.
* = currently really like

Collision
Animal
Stray Cat
Mutt
Happy Fox
kitsune bunka (Fox Culture)
Kitsune (Fox)
Vulpe (Fox)
Zorro (Fox–like it but too strongly associated with the masked crime fighter)
Fenix
*Hi Jack/Hi Jinx (names suggested by my mom)
*Sugoi
*Ganzo
Corrupter
Chameleon
Sounder
*Pet
Red Panda
Caribou
Lycaon
*Wasabi G

03/26/09 – I think I’m going to go with MIlk

04/06/09 – Yeah, changed my mind…the list continues…

Senior Project Idea
Posted on March 14th, 2009 at 10:50 am by sjrodr06 and

For my senior project I would like to (literally or hypothetically) launch my own line of apparel and toys based off and inspired by my favourite brands.  This will include a website and prototypes for what will be t-shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, shoes, stuffed animals, bags, vinyl toys, posters, plates and cups, and other miscellaneous items.  In order to accomplish that I will research my favourite brands (such as Sanrio, Tokidoki, Mother Garden, Gama-go, Emily Strange, Ruby Gloom, Ice Cream by Pharrell, Juicy Couture by Gwen Stefani, Kid Robot, and so on) and research material on entrepenaurship as well as material that will help me develop and refine my craft.  I intend to create products of high quality in both materials and in detail and in order to do so I know I must master several techniques.  For this project there a several various forms of art I will need to use in order to carry out my goal efficiently; web and graphic design, digital design and animation, screenprinting, soft sculpture (sewing), sculpture, ceramics, painting, and drawing.

I believe that this is a practical and useful project for me to do because it isn’t something that I will work on once and then stuff in my portfolio or forget about.  If I can follow through with this project I will continue to work on it long after I have graduated from St. Lawrence University.  I fully intend on making this line a reality.  Growing up I had many dreams, as any child does; I wanted to be a vet, a dolphin trainer, a teacher, an actress, but all throughout my childhood another dream flickered in the background unrealised.  I had this insatiable attraction to all things cute and cuddly (despite my tomboyishness) especially in the loveable characters of Sanrio.  When I first arrived at St. Lawrence during HEOP’s required pre-freshman summer seminar we were asked what career we would like to have in the future.  My answer was that I wanted to create the next Sanrio and as I get closer to my senior year I feel that dream getting closer to realization.  For awhile it seemed impossible and unlikely to achieve, but now I feel it is one of the only options for me to be happy in my career in future.

I also think this would be a great research oppurtunity to study abroad in Japan.  Sanrio, ltd. has a great reputation for being helpful and informative about their products and history.  What better way could I research them then going to the source?  In addition to seeing the Sanrio headquarters I could witness first hand Japan’s culture of cute and gain inspiration for my line from Haraguku, Shibuya, and Tokyo in general.  Born and raised in New York City, I’ve been heavily influenced and exposed to all forms of street art–which, in its own way, can be breathtakingly beautiful–but extremely hard edge.  If I can work to combine rugged urban art with sugary sweet Japanese-esque commercial characters I believe I can create a fun an interesting line that will appeal to audiences across the borders.  In order to achieve this though I really fel that I need to experience Japanese culture first hand.

If not Japan, than Italy would be my second choice.  Not only because I fell in love with Italy when I studied abroad last semester but because it is home to the creator of my second favourite brand, Tokidoki.  I look up to Simone Legno because he started out much like I’m starting out right now.  He had a dream so he created a website to sell his fun and unique products.  Several years later he’s approached by Hard Candy Cosmetics to turn his personal website into a real product line.  His story has inspired me to do my best in pursuing my dreams.  Until I had read about it I didn’t think it would ever be possible for me to reach that level, now I understand that thinking that way is like giving up before I have even begun.  If this is something I love and want to do I have to do my best.  If I could meet and speak with Simone Legno, or even just visit the Tokidoki headquarters in Milan I could really feel the full effect of what one person’s hardwork and dedication to a dream can achieve.  This, I know, will give me the motivation I need to push forward.

Becoming Piece
Posted on March 11th, 2009 at 9:31 pm by sjrodr06 and

For my becoming piece I have decided to try my hand at stop motion animation, much like that seen in a flipbook. The story will be about my pets Mork, Ollie, and Leo (with a possible guest appearance from my ghost-cat Cookie). I was thinking the story could start with Mork trotting along, looking behind him the way he does when he knows someone’s coming after him. Then Ollie catches up with him easily with his long strides and kicks Mork out of the frame very passive aggressively (he’s a bully like that). Then he stops, the image pans ahead to Leo sitting there, tail swishing. Leo raises paw extending claws and Ollie runs away. Leo snickers until we pan ahead again and see Cookie floating in ghost form. Leo turns to walk away, sees Cookie, hair stands on end and then he runs away. Cookie snickers, twirls around and disappears in a puff of smoke.

That’s one idea anyway, but I don’t know how capable I am seeing it through.

Typography
Posted on March 11th, 2009 at 9:20 pm by sjrodr06 and

http://chococat101.deviantart.com/favourites/#typography

What I’ve noticed about the pieces of typography I’m drawn to is that I really like when they create an image with words, maybe because I’m such a visual person. I especially like it when the words used to make up the image are relevant to the subject of the image. I find that I also like the cluttered look that’s busy and yet uniform. Handwritten pieces also appeal to me though I don’t think I’ve pick out many in this list. There’s something about a handwritten piece that just has a way of moving me.

Self reflection
Posted on March 11th, 2009 at 9:09 pm by sjrodr06 and

I would say that my strengths as an artist are designing and developing abstract and contemporary ideas. However, I feel this only amplifies my weakness which is realism. I really hate realism. I will do it for an assignment if I have to because I feel it’s important that I try and learn everything I can while I can, but I’m quite aware that I realistic rendering is not something I enjoy. Therefore, I never really do very well, in my personal opinion.

I also have trouble replicating, mainly because when I like something it’s difficult for me to figure out what it is that I like about it. So when I look at different styles and try to replicate them it’s difficult for me because I feel like I can’t find the essence of the style I’m trying to portray.

Those are the only skill holes I’m really concerned about.
