Google Earth

A tour in an Arab country (using Google Earth) – Arabic 104

This project was divided into two steps:

Step 1:

The students had to create a brochure promoting a visit to an Arab Country.

Brochure requirements:

    • Name and location of country (where is it in the world)
    • Government (who leads the country, how they were elected, what type of government)
    • Sites to see (include at least seven sites to visit when in your country)
    • Geography (include natural attractions or natural resources in your country)
    • Culture (include at least 3 of the following in your brochure: holidays, dress, lifestyles/customs, food, recreation/games, language, economics)
    • Photos/Pictures (include at least 3 pictures or photos from your country)
    • It should be handwritten in Arabic.

This brochure is about Morrocco

Step 2:

Students used Google Earth to explore the country that they chose. They had to find at least seven landmarks in the country. For each landmark, they had to write a paragraph explaining its significance; then they created a movie using the “tour option”.

Movies

French 104 - The project was pretty open-ended. Students were asked to make a 10 minute video sharing a French subject with the class. In the video, it needed to be clear what subject they were talking about, they needed to provide some basic information about that subject, and they needed to show how it applied to everyday French life. For having such open guidelines, the students created many different kinds of videos about many different subjects. 10 minutes proved difficult for the groups to reach, but they still managed to make some great videos about their subjects. Below are several examples:

Les Crepes

Les Fetes Francaises

Jean Paul Gaultier

Football et le francais

Le ballet de Ryan

Spanish 446: Students of Advanced Oral Skills had to create a 20-30 minute television news bulletin. For their video project, students had to search very recent news from a specific hispanic country, either in journals or in real television news bulletins of the hispanic world. Then, they had to rewrite their news in their own words, film themselves delivering their news, and create newsreels by including video or photo archives. Students used iMovie to create their video project. Click here to see samples of the project.

Photo Story 3

PhotoStory – Italian: The Italian 102 class used photo story for a project they conducted on their Chapter 8 vacation vocabulary unit. The students were put in pairs and told to use the vacation vocabulary from their textbook to create a photo story with pictures describing their “dream vacation”. I gave them the option to narrate their story as well because they had to type at least one sentence for each picture in the story and speaking into the microphone helps one to learn the language better. They were told to talk about their dream vacation, where they would go and what they would do and with whom they would do it. This particular group added music to their photo story as well. I chose to use this program because I thought it would be a fun and new way to use the vocabulary other than just writing sentences with one another or doing something simple such as a crossword puzzle. The feedback from the students was very positive and they enjoyed using photo story.
