Pinterest: A Procrastinator’s (Crafty) Dream

As we’re quickly approaching spring break (!), I’ll be the first to admit that I’m starting to feel the mid-semester blues.  While I’m loving my classes this semester, there are definitely some days where my level of motivation leaves much to be desired.  One trick I’ve discovered that helps give me  a little pump-up in the midst of all my work is taking 5-10 minute breaks every so often to give my brain a little breather.  On those breaks I like to visit some of my favorite websites–they range from music sites to funny video blogs to celebrity gossip pages (silly, I know, but so addicting), and it really seems to help me take a mental pause and re-gain some inspiration for the homework ahead.  There’s one website in particular that I’ve been loving lately, and the cool thing about it is that there’s something for everyone!

Pinterest is basically an online pinboard.  Let’s say your wandering around the interwebs and you find a dress (or whatever your heart desires) that you want to bookmark for later or that you want to share.  You “pin it” to your profile on this website and it will preserve the link, not to mention share it with all your followers.  You can keep your profile private or make it public, and create as many different categories of pins as you want.  Currently, I have pinboards for yummy recipes I find, pictures of different places around the world I’d like to visit, funny videos, and of course, my clothing wish list.

I started off using Pinterest as a distraction tool; believe me, it’s not hard to lose yourself there for hours (so be warned!).  But, there is a such a wide variety of pins that it made me want to start a collection of my own.  Now whenever I see something interesting or cool online I can save it for later, and it’s a really handy way for me to keep all my bookmarks organized.  It’s also fun to see awesome things my friends or other users are finding online.

One of the most popular genres on Pinterest is art.  I, unfortunately, was not blessed with a lot of artistic talent so I really enjoy seeing what other people are making.  All of the pictures that get pinned to the website are attached to links, and I’ve found some really cool art websites in my time with Pinterest.  People are always posting nifty craft ideas and tips for decorating, too, and my roommate and I have even taken some of the ideas we’ve seen on the website and made things for our room!  If you’re like me and really wish you were more artistically inclined, Pinterest gives you a lot of ideas for simple projects that are easy and turn out really, really nicely!

Like I said, there’s something for everyone, so whether you’re interested in crafts, cooking, literature, movies, music–you name it, I guarantee you’ll find something to tickle your fancy.  Even if you don’t make a profile, I think it’s a great place to visit during a study break.  I know it’s definitely helped me get inspired during those long days of schoolwork.  But, procrastinators be warned…once you visit Pinterest you may never want to leave!
