Mission Statement
The mission of the David Garner Center for Collegiate Volunteerism is to create co-curricular learning opportunities for students to develop, practice, and incorporate the principles of leadership and service learning in our communities. Our faculty, staff, and students work to design meaningful programs and activities to encourage a lifelong pursuit of personal growth along with a more purposeful and compassionate connection to society at large.

We recognize students and friends who dedicated their time- -to  make a SLU buddy smile, pound a nail  for Habitat, choose an angel for the Giving Tree, work on farms, walk for NYSARC,  don an apron for Campus Kitchens, honor MLK Day, give Thanksgiving turkeys, help at the Thrift Store, rake leaves for the elderly, volunteer at United Helpers,  travel to Odgensburg Girls and Boys Club, adopt a pet at the Animal Sanctuary, join those at St. Francis in Philadelphia, and build homes in Tazewell, TN – Good luck to all seniors, we shall miss you.  We look forward to seeing our volunteers in the fall.   Have a great and safe summer and most of all,  thank you for making this 2009-2010 academic year of volunteerism an exceptional one.

MLK- Day of Service – Celebrating Service and Volunteerism

A Kick-Off Event
Our gratitude is extended to the Volunteers of Campus Kitchens for an informative evening and a delicious dinner.  There were many who attended this event on Thursday, January 28th at Eben Holden.  Kitchen tours were held and posters and displays revealed stark facts regarding local and worldwide hunger.  Dinner included lasagna, garlic bread, spaghetti, meatballs, salad, dessert and a beverage.  We appreciate the number of volunteers who signed up to help with Campus Kitchens.  We also thank those who donated kitchen items to get this project started.

St. Lawrence University has received a grant to become a member of the Campus Kitchens Network.  The main goal of the Campus Kitchens Project is to use leftover food to create nutritious meals for those in the community that may need it.  So far we have a partnership with both SLU and SUNY Canton dining services to use reclaimed food from the dining Halls.  We will be using Eben Holden to prepare the meals, and the Newman Center on Court Street to serve them.

SLU and SUNY Canton Habitat for Humanity featured in
“Watertown Times”
“Habitat house work at its ‘most fun part’ by Alex Jacobs, Watertown Times Staff Writer, November 22, 2009.
“Students from St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton cut studs, nailed together
frames and erected walls with the help of Racquette Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteers.”  The house will go to a local Canton resident.  The SLU and Canton Chapter of Habitat for Humanity builds houses for needy families in and outside of the area.  The article is a testament to the hard work and dedication our SLU and Canton students have towards this vital organization.

Apply to lead service programs in New England, Santa Fe, the Rockies, Hawaii, Alaska, Costa Rica or the Virgin Islands this summer.  Overland Service Leaders are typically juniors or seniors who have service and leadership experience.  Overland offers outdoor trips, community service projects, language study abroad, environmental studies and summer writing programs to young adults ages 11 to 18 from across the country and around the world.   For the past 25 years, our focus on small, supportive groups, carefully crafted programs and inspiring leadership has enabled both students and leaders to have fun, develop close friendships, be challenged and grow in the process.   Other leadership positions are also available at Overland.  For further information and to download the application, please visit www.overlandprograms.com/leaders.
