“Farmer’s markets” to “supermarkets”

As I talked about in my presentation about change in food system in Nepal especially in Kathmandu, there is a slow shift in consumption from “farmer’s market” style grocery shopping to “supermarket” grocery shopping. The impact of this is obviously more import of vegetables and fruits from abroad. In the past, the primary source of food products have been from within the country.
Now, it is slowly changing. This is particularly concerning because almost 75% of Nepal’s labour force is in agricultural production (2010 CIA factbook). Here is a link an emerging supermarket that has its branches in several cities in Nepal. http://www.bhatbhatenionline.com/Contents/our-stores.html
