While researching President Museveni’s opinion about homosexuality and the AH Bill I came across his wife’s opinion. Janet Museveni has taken a much firmer stance in opposing homosexuality and supporting the bill than her husband. Ugandan Senior Presidential adviser Nagenda stated that the First Lady was “ultimately behind” the bill even during the first introduction of it when the death penalty was included. This differs greatly from President Museveni’s public statements that he fully disapproves of the killing or persecution of homosexuals.
Janet Museveni opposes homosexuality on the basis that it is a sin. She also is a known friend of many of the American evangelical pastors I have mentioned in previous blog posts. The article I’ve included below mentions a speech the First Lady gave at Makarere University in Kampala in 2010 where she stated, “In God’s word, homosexuality attracts a curse, but now people are engaging in it and saying they are created that way. It is for money… The devil is stoking fires to destroy our nation and those taking advantage are doing so because our people are poor.”
