This photo is from a New York Times article titled, “When the Ring Gets Its Own Engagement Photo.” I have stumbled upon articles discussing the new trend of posting engagement photos all over Facebook. I think this would be a good way to tie in Williams into me case-study. His idea of emergent cultures and also cultural materialism can be used here: how has Facebook transformed what it means for a woman to be engaged and how people draw conclusions about the bride and the couple and do not focus on the significance of the engagement itself.
The focus on the ring as an image (and not the couple, not even the bride), can be seen as a type of cultural fetishism with diamonds. Social media and over-sharing then allows users of Facebook to spread these messages more publicly.
