The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

The story of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is still enjoyed by today’s audiences, but never quite like this. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a web series done in video-blog format that follows Lizzie, a modern version of Austen’s Elizabeth Bennet, as she navigates her way through life, love, and hardship. Produced and edited by Hank Green of Vlogbrothers fame, this series is meta on meta. Vloggers often portray a persona that is not exactly themselves, but never before have actors vlogged as fictional characters. The comments below the videos discuss Lizzie and Darcy and Jane, but very rarely discuss the actors. You can also follow Lizzie Bennet and other characters on Tumblr and Twitter, creating an interactive viewing experience like no other.

Besides the innovative format, what is great about these videos is their expansive and modern take on Pride and Prejudice. The relationship between Lizzie and Darcy doesn’t consume the episodes. Instead, we see a lot of Lizzie’s relationships with her sisters and her best friend, Charlotte. She also deals with issues like student loans and being a grad student and figuring out what to do with her life (something to which I can definitely relate). It’s nice to see an adaptation that is both creative in its translation and also true to the original text.

Here’s the first episode:

WARNING: Catching up may consume your life for a few days. Seriously.
